Ol Doinyo Lengai — The Mountain of God
Experience Tanzania’s only active volcano and one of the most unique trekking adventures in East Africa.
About Ol Doinyo Lengai
Located in northern Tanzania near Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai is revered by the Maasai as the “Mountain of God.” It’s the only known volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava — a rare, low-temperature lava that appears black in daylight and glows white at night. The climb offers both a spiritual and geological experience, with breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley, Mount Gelai, and Lake Natron below.
Highlights of the Trek
- Climb an active volcano — Tanzania’s only one still erupting
- Witness sunrise over Lake Natron and the Rift Valley escarpment
- Meet Maasai communities living at the mountain’s base
- View unique lava formations and fumaroles near the summit
- Combine the trek with a visit to Lake Natron’s flamingo breeding grounds
Typical Itinerary
Day 1 — Arusha to Lake Natron
Depart Arusha early morning and drive through Engaruka village to Lake Natron. Visit the waterfall and flamingo sites, and enjoy sunset views of Ol Doinyo Lengai. Overnight at a camp near the base.
Day 2 — Night Ascent & Summit
Begin the climb around midnight to reach the summit by sunrise (approx. 5–7 hours). The trail is steep and demanding but rewards climbers with stunning views and active volcanic vents. Descend carefully and return to camp for breakfast before heading back to Arusha or continuing your safari.
What to See
- Lake Natron — breeding ground for thousands of flamingos
- Waterfalls and natural pools in the Rift Valley
- Volcanic lava flows and steam vents at the summit
- Views of Mount Gelai and the endless Rift Valley plains
- Traditional Maasai villages around the foothills
What to Carry
- Strong hiking boots with good grip (terrain is steep and dusty)
- Headlamp (essential for the midnight climb)
- Warm layers — early morning temperatures drop sharply
- Plenty of water (at least 3 liters per person)
- Snacks and energy bars
- Walking poles for support on descent
- Camera for sunrise and lava field photography
Best Time to Go
The best months for climbing are during the dry seasons (June–October and December–March). Trails are safer and skies clearer, giving you the best views of Lake Natron and surrounding peaks. Avoid April–May when heavy rains make access roads difficult.
