Marangu Route — Classic Kilimanjaro Trek

Also called the “Coca-Cola Route”, Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most established trail. It offers hut accommodation, moderate slopes, and a traditional ascent path, making it ideal for first-time climbers or those seeking comfort along the way.

About Marangu Route

Description:
Marangu is known as the “Coca-Cola Route” due to its popularity and ease of logistics. This route is the only trail offering hut accommodation instead of tents, making it a comfortable choice for trekkers who prefer not to camp. The trail is well-marked and passes through diverse ecosystems, from tropical rainforest to moorland and alpine desert, before reaching Kibo Hut and the iconic Uhuru Peak.

Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 5–6 Days (recommended 6 for acclimatisation)
Distance: ~70 km

Landscape & Highlights

  • Lush rainforest with abundant wildlife at lower altitudes
  • Heather moorlands and scenic alpine desert above 3,500 m
  • Overnight stays in comfortable shared huts with beds
  • Classic sunrise summit from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak
  • Historic route — follows the same path up and down
  • Shorter itinerary, making logistics and trekking straightforward

Practical Tips

  • Acclimatisation is crucial — consider adding an extra day if possible.
  • Huts provide basic meals, but carry personal snacks and water purification tablets.
  • Weather can vary drastically — prepare for cold summit temperatures and rain in the forest zone.
  • Altitude sickness is common; ascend slowly and drink plenty of fluids.

Best Time to Climb

June – October and December – March provide the best conditions, offering clear skies, dry trails, and higher summit success rates. Avoid the long rainy season (March–May) when trails may be slippery.
