About the Rongai Route
The Rongai Route is known for its remote, scenic approach to Mount Kilimanjaro. Beginning on the northern side of the mountain, trekkers pass through pristine wilderness areas before joining the Marangu route for the summit attempt. It’s ideal for those looking for solitude and a gradual ascent profile that supports good acclimatization.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 – Moshi to Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Depart Moshi and drive to the Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. Begin the trek through pine forests, spotting wildlife along the way before arriving at Simba Camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 2 – Simba Camp to Second Cave
Gradual ascent across moorland terrain with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern Ice Fields. Overnight at Second Cave Camp.
Day 3 – Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp
Continue climbing steadily through the open moorland and alpine desert. Enjoy incredible mountain views before reaching Kikelewa Camp.
Day 4 – Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn
Steep climb up grassy slopes with views of Mawenzi’s jagged peaks. Camp beside the stunning Mawenzi Tarn, a lake nestled below the mountain spires.
Day 5 – Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut
Traverse the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks — an expansive alpine desert. Overnight at Kibo Hut before the midnight summit attempt.
Day 6 – Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Start your climb around midnight to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise (5,895m). Celebrate your achievement, then descend to Horombo Hut for rest and overnight.
Day 7 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi.
