Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Trek through rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp (~2,820 m). 6 km, 3–4 hrs.

Day 2 — Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Hike into moorland to Shira 1 Camp (~3,500 m). 8 km, 5–6 hrs.

Day 3 — Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

Cross the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp (~3,840 m). 7 km, 4–5 hrs.

Day 4 — Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Barranco

Acclimatise at Lava Tower (4,630 m) then descend to Barranco (3,950 m).

Day 5 — Barranco to Karanga

Climb the Barranco Wall and continue to Karanga.

Day 6 — Karanga to Barafu

Steep climb to Barafu (4,600 m) before summit night.

Day 7 — Summit to Mweka Camp

Push to Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp.

Day 8 — Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Final walk through rainforest to exit.

Best Time to Climb

June–October and December–March.

Practical Tips

  • 8 days gives best success rate.
  • Hydrate well & go slowly.
  • Use trekking poles.
