About Ol Doinyo Lengai

Located in northern Tanzania near Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai is revered by the Maasai as the “Mountain of God.” It’s the only known volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava — a rare, low-temperature lava that appears black in daylight and glows white at night. The climb offers both a spiritual and geological experience, with breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley, Mount Gelai, and Lake Natron below.

Highlights of the Trek

  • Climb an active volcano — Tanzania’s only one still erupting
  • Witness sunrise over Lake Natron and the Rift Valley escarpment
  • Meet Maasai communities living at the mountain’s base
